Stocks are perhaps the most commonly traded, but currencies and futures are also traded quite heavily by day traders.

Before the internet and changes in legislation that made it possible for casual investors to take part in the practice easily, most day traders were employees of investment firms or fund managers who had easy access to the system.

These days many casual investors are able to trade on their own through the use of the Internet. This has exploded the popularity of day trading, because so many more people are able to participate in it.

There are many different styles of day trading. Some people may make dozens of trades every day, knowing they may lose money on some and win on some, but hoping their wins mitigate their losses. Others may be more careful, watching the markets and particular stocks carefully and investing only when they feel good potential is there.

Some day traders prefer to trade many times per day, often buying financial instruments and selling them mere seconds or minutes later. Since they trade in such significant volume, they often get special discounts on fees from their broker.

Some will only watch price momentum, while others prefer to watch trend patterns. Many day traders have devised their own special strategies that use a combination of strategies to choose the right time and instrument to buy or sell.
